What Read the Room collects, why, how you control it — and the terms you agree to by playing.
Effective . This explains what Read the Room collects, why, and how you can control it.
Volk Works Lab is the data controller for Read the Room — the party that decides what data is collected and why. You can reach us about anything in this policy at hello@getreadtheroom.app.
Profile info you choose to give us: a display name (yours or an alias), a broad age range, your country, and an avatar you pick or generate — none of this requires your real name, email, or phone number. Gameplay data: your daily answers, streak, points, prediction accuracy, and badges earned. Optional sign-in: if you choose to back up your streak, we link your account to your Google or Apple sign-in. Depending on what you approve on that provider's own screen, this may share your name and email address with us. A push notification token, only if you turn reminders on, so we can send the daily results notification and streak reminders. Content you submit: if you write your own take, that text is reviewed before it can appear, and is then shown to other players.
We don't collect your precise location, contacts, photos, or browsing activity, and we don't use advertising trackers. Your country is a field you pick yourself — we don't read it from your device.
Under the GDPR we need a legal basis for each purpose. Ours are: Running the game — matching your answers against the room's, tracking your streak and points, showing leaderboards, and comparing you to your country and age group. Legal basis: performance of a contract, the terms you accept by playing. Reviewing takes you submit before other players see them, and acting on reports. Legal basis: legitimate interests, in keeping the game usable and safe for everyone. Sending notifications, only if you turn them on. Legal basis: your consent, which you can withdraw at any time in Settings. Keeping the service secure and preventing abuse. Legal basis: legitimate interests.
Supabase, our backend and database provider, stores your account and gameplay data on our behalf as a processor. If you link a Google or Apple account, that company processes your sign-in under its own privacy policy. Expo's push notification service delivers notifications, if you've enabled them. We do not sell your data, and we do not share it for advertising.
Where we or our providers process your data outside the European Economic Area, that transfer is covered by the provider's data processing agreement incorporating the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses. If you want to know where your data is hosted at any given time, ask us at hello@getreadtheroom.app and we'll tell you.
We keep your profile and gameplay data for as long as your account exists. If you delete your account, it and everything tied to it are removed immediately and permanently. Takes you submitted may remain in the game after your account is gone, but with nothing linking them to you.
If you are in the EEA or the UK, you have the right to: Access the personal data we hold about you, and get a copy of it. Correct anything inaccurate — your name, age range, country and avatar are editable in Settings at any time. Delete your account and all data tied to it, at any time from Settings. This is immediate and cannot be undone. Restrict or object to how we use your data, including anything we rely on legitimate interests for. Receive your data in a portable, machine-readable form. Withdraw consent for notifications at any time, without affecting anything that happened before. To exercise any of these, email hello@getreadtheroom.app. We'll respond within one month.
If you think we have handled your data wrongly, please tell us first — we would rather fix it. You also have the right to complain to your national data protection authority. In the EEA that is the supervisory authority for the country you live or work in; in the UK it is the Information Commissioner's Office.
This app is not directed at young children, and we do not knowingly collect data from them. In the European Economic Area, you must be at least 16 to use Read the Room without permission from a parent or guardian, and we ask you to confirm this when you set up your profile. Some EEA countries set a lower age, but we apply 16 throughout. Elsewhere, you must be at least 13.
We may update this policy as the app changes. Continuing to use the app after an update means you accept the revised policy.
By using Read the Room, you agree to these terms.
Your account is tied to this device unless you link a Google or Apple sign-in. You're responsible for keeping access to that linked sign-in secure.
Be a good sport. Don't submit takes or reactions that harass, threaten, or contain hate speech, illegal content, or spam. We may remove content or suspend accounts that break this.
If you submit a take, you're granting us the right to show it to other players inside the app. Takes are reviewed before they appear. You're responsible for what you write, and you can report anything another player wrote from the take itself.
The game is provided "as is." We try to keep it running smoothly but can't promise it will be error-free or always available.
We may update these terms or the app itself over time. Continuing to use the app after a change means you accept the new terms.
You can stop using the app and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate accounts that break these terms.
